Task at Hand
The new Rookery South Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) is designed to process around 550,000 tonnes of non-recyclable residual waste annually, producing over 60 megawatts of baseload electricity — enough to power 112,500 local homes and businesses — while recovering valuable resources. The disused London Brick clay pit provided the ideal setting.
Engineers had to find a solution for the facility’s concrete floors so they would have a wear-resistant surface capable of handling the constant supply of trucks and loading-shovel traffic. After less than three years of construction, the facility completed commissioning and was handed to the operator, Covanta, within the original contractual schedule.
KingKrete Solution
A non-oxidising, chemically inert, metallic dry-shake floor topping for monolithic floors — a blend of specially graded aggregates, additives, and Ordinary Portland Cement. Easily applied and premixed, it produces a dense, tough, abrasion- and wear-resistant surface, also resistant to oil and grease, especially suitable for heavy industries and power plants.
The concrete substrate was fully compacted and smoothed; bleed water was allowed to rise and evaporate. Once light foot traffic left an imprint of 3–6 mm, the slab was ready to receive the hardener.
For large floor areas, KingHard MT50 was spread and trowelled in one stage by mechanical spreaders. For manual application, two-thirds of the quantity was spread first and allowed to absorb moisture; after floating, the remaining third was applied evenly and the floor floated a final time.
Applied to the newly installed concrete, the dry-shake system transformed surface wear capability by 300–500% into a special wear class, ideal for harsh environments and heavy industry.
